Electric, Water, Wastewater (Sewer), and Garbage
Electric and Garbage services extend to approximately 13.5 mile Zimovia Highway and generally provide service to all properties connected to the paved road system. Water and sewer services extend to approximately 6-mile Zimovia Highway, and properties past this point on Zimovia Highway generally utilize some form of water catchment and septic systems.
Generally, no, it is Borough ordinance (WMC 15.18.070) that “every owner, occupant, liveaboard, tenant or lessee within the borough’s garbage collection service area shall receive refuse pickup service and shall pay such fees as are set forth in this section.”
Only if a service location is vacant and thus no utilities are provided, or a special waiver is granted by the Borough Manager or authorized agent based upon an investigation of the circumstances, can garbage services be waived.
Garbage fees are assessed for not only curbside collection but also operations at the landfill and shipping costs.
No, due to a number of reasons and chronic challenges managing customer vacation rates, the City and Borough of Wrangell is no longer offering vacation rates. You may request the Public Works Department shut off water to the location for a $50 fee, at which point you would not be charged for water, sewer or garbage services for the duration of your absence. The fee to turn services back on when you return is also $50. Therefore if your absence is 7 weeks or longer, it is likely to your financial advantage to request shutting services off rather than paying the normal monthly charges.
