Position Summary
This is a union full-time, hourly position with benefits. Pay is set at Grade 17. The City & Borough of Wrangell is seeking a skilled and dependable Facilities Maintenance Specialist to support the day-to-day maintenance, repair, and operation of all Borough-owned buildings and grounds. This position performs a wide range of mid-level technical maintenance and repair work across multiple trades, ensuring facilities are safe, functional, and compliant with applicable regulations.
The Facility Maintenance Specialist works independently and as part of a team, responds to routine and emergency maintenance needs, and may occasionally assist other departments with special projects. Extended hours, callouts, and work in challenging weather conditions may be required based on facility and operational needs.
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge of building maintenance principles, materials, tools, and equipment, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and building automation systems. Ability to read technical manuals and drawings; knowledge of safety practices and OSHA standards; and basic computer skills, including maintenance management systems. Ability to work independently, troubleshoot and solve problems, communicate professionally, perform physical labor indoors and outdoors, maintain accurate records, and adapt to unplanned or emergency situations. Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, climb, work in confined spaces and at heights, lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally, and wear required personal protective equipment, including respirators.
High school diploma or GED required, with four (4) years of journey-level experience in building maintenance or skilled trades, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; college or technical coursework related to building maintenance technologies is preferred. A valid Alaska Driver’s License is required; Class 1 Boiler Certificate and EPA 608 Certification are preferred. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions with exposure to mechanical equipment, physical labor, noise, fumes, hazardous materials, and occasional electrical hazards.
