Local Borough Election - October 6, 2026

NOTICE TO VOTERS - ARE YOU REGISTERED?

Voter qualifications for the City & Borough of Wrangell, October 6, 2026, Regular Election, are as follows:

  1. a United States citizen; and
  2. registered and qualified to vote in the State of Alaska elections and registered thereat for at least thirty (30) days immediately preceding the municipal election; and
  3. at least eighteen (18) years of age; and
  4. a resident of the City & Borough of Wrangell for thirty (30) days preceding the election; and
  5. not disqualified by reason of having been convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude, and if so, that civil rights have been restored, nor disqualified because judicially determined to be of unsound mind.

Voters are cautioned to make certain their residence address is correct on their State Voter Registration.  City law requires that each voter shall be registered to vote in the precinct in which that person seeks to vote to vote in municipal elections.

Your name must appear on the precinct list!  If you are registered in another city, you must change your registration prior to Sunday, September 6, 2026, to qualify to vote in the Regular Election of October 6, 2026.

You may ask the Borough Clerk to check the precinct register to assure your qualifications.

NOTICE FOR DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY

Declaration of Candidacy for the upcoming October 6, 2026 Regular Borough Election will be open in the Borough Clerk’s Office from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, August 3, 2026 through August 31, 2026.

Qualified persons may have their name placed on the ballot for the October 6, 2026 ballot by filing declarations of candidacy for the following seats:

Borough Mayor:          One – (2 Year Term)  

Borough Assembly:    Two – (3 Year Terms)

School Board:              One – (3 Year Term)

Port Commission:       One – (3 Year Term)

Port Commission:       One – (2 Year Unexpired Term)

 

 

NOTICE OF REGULAR ELECTION

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on the 6th day of October 2026, in the City and Borough of Wrangell, Alaska, a Regular Local Election will be held for the purpose of voting on the following Borough Official positions.

Borough Mayor:          One – (2 Year Term)  

Borough Assembly:    Two – (3 Year Terms)

School Board:              One – (3 Year Term)

Port Commission:       One – (3 Year Term)

Port Commission:       One – (2 Year Unexpired Term)

The polls for said election will be open at 8:00 a.m. on the said day and will close at 8:00 p.m. on the same day.

Each voter must have the qualifications prescribed by state law.  A qualified voter shall vote only once per election and shall exercise that right at the polling place established in the designated Wrangell Precinct (James & Elsie Nolan Center) and in which he/she resides within the borough boundaries of the City and Borough of Wrangell.

 

 

NOTICE FOR ABSENTEE VOTING

ABSENTEE VOTING for the Regular Borough Election (to be held October 6, 2026) begins on MONDAY, September 21, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., (Monday through Friday) at City Hall.

Qualified Voters may vote an Absentee Ballot until Monday, October 5, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. for the Regular Borough Election.

For those voters who cannot VOTE ABSENTEE IN PERSON, you may submit an application to have your ballot mailed, emailed, or faxed to you.

Please stop by the Borough’s Clerks Office to apply.

 

 NOTICE FOR WRITE-IN CANDIDATE FILING

For the upcoming City and Borough of Wrangell Regular Election of October 6, 2026, the following ordinance applies:

2.16.030          Write-in Candidates and Write-in Votes.  Individuals who fail to file a declaration of candidacy but wish to run for office as a write-in candidate, must file with the borough clerk, a letter of intent no later than four p.m. on the Friday preceding the election (October 2, 2026) in which the candidate plans to participate. 

Write-in votes cast for individuals who do not file a letter of intent will not be counted.

In order to vote for a write-in candidate, the voter must, in space provided, write in the candidate’s name as the candidate’s name appears on the letter of intent filed with the borough clerk.  In addition, the voter must mark the oval opposite the candidate’s name. 

Stickers shall not be used.

 

 

NOTICE FOR CITY BOARD AND COMMITTEE VACANCIES

Persons interested in serving on the following City Boards and Committees, please submit your Letter of Interest to the Office of the Borough Clerk, City & Borough of Wrangell, P.O. Box 531, Wrangell, AK 99929. You can also email your Letter of Interest to the Borough Clerk at: clerk@wrangell.com.

Deadline for Letters of Interest is 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2025, for the following vacancies:

Planning & Zoning Commission                    one (1) - three-year terms

Wrangell Convention & Visitors Bureau       two (2) three-year terms

Economic Development Committee             two (2) three-year terms

Appointments will be made on October 13, 2026, at the Regular Assembly meeting.
