There will be a Presentation held before the Regular Assembly meeting on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 from 6pm to 7pm, in the Borough Assembly Chambers at City Hall, 205 Brueger Street, on the following item:

Tsunami Landslide Presentation

Join UAF Professor Elena Troshina for a presentation on tsunami hazards and preparedness in Alaska.

Alaska has a long history of destructive tsunamis—but how well are we prepared for the next one? The presentation will explore how tsunamis are generated, why Alaska is particularly vulnerable, lessons from past disasters, and what coastal residents need to know to stay safe.

During the Regular Assembly meeting that will follow at 7pm, there will be a Public Hearing during on the following item(s):

Ordinance No. 1103 of the Assembly of the City and Borough of Wrangell, Alaska, adding Section 3.04.140 to the Wrangell Municipal Code to authorize the Borough Clerk to affix authorized manual, electronic, or facsimile signatures to official documents

Ordinance No. 1104 of the Assembly of the City and Borough of Wrangell, Alaska, amending Sections 11.28.080 – Blocking Roadway Prohibited and Section 13.04.030 – Obstruction of Traffic Prohibited, to strengthen the provisions for obstructing roadways, in the Wrangell Municipal Code

Ordinance No. 1105 of the Assembly of the City and Borough of Wrangell, Alaska, amending several Sections in Chapter 5.08 – Sales Tax, in the Wrangell Municipal Code

Wrangell Island Landslide Hazards

Where have landslides occurred on Wrangell Island, and where could they happen?

Join the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) for a public presentation exploring Wrangell Island’s landslide history and potential hazard areas.

DGGS will share what comparisons of lidar data, updated landslide mapping, and new hazard modeling reveal about how the landscape is changing and where landslides and debris flows may occur in and around Wrangell.

Residents, property owners, and anyone interested in learning more about Wrangell’s natural hazards and preparedness are encouraged to attend.
