Community Orchard Planting

Calendar Date:
Saturday, June 30, 2012 - 10:00am

Thanks to all who came to help plant the Community Orchard on June 30, and help our "Community Take Root"

Last year, due to the diligence and support of Wrangell residents, Wrangell won the orchard through the Communities Take Root program.  Wrangell casted a total of 25,508 votes over 4.5 months of voting on-line. Wrangell is  one of 20 communities to win an orchard last summer – and the last of those to get planted!

Dreyer’s Fruit Bars “Communities Take Root” Program Awarded the  Fruit Orchard to Wrangell Medical Center

Who: Wrangell Medical Center of Wrangell, Alaska, is a Critical Access Hospital and Long-Term Care facility committed to enhance the quality of life for all they serve. In concert with the Wrangell School District, the trees will be planted at Evergreen Elementary School, across the street from their facility. Wrangell Medical Center hopes to give the community access to fresh ripe fruits, which can be an issue in the community due to their remote location unconnected to any road system.

What: Wrangell Medical Center will receive a fruit orchard consisting of dozens of fruit trees and berries of varying types from Communities Take Root. This fruit orchard will provide fresh fruit to scores of citizens in Wrangell on the land just north of Evergreen Elementary School, across the street from the hospital. This orchard is the perfect addition to this remote community.

When: Saturday, June 30th at 10:00 am

10:00 am: Project overview and introductions (Edy’s Fruit Bars, Wrangell Medical Center, Fruit Tree Planting Foundation)
10:20-10:40 am: Ceremonial Tree Planting/Photo Opportunity
10:40-12:30 pm: Tree planting; Dreyer’s Fruit Bars sampling

Where: 310 Bennett St., Wrangell, AK 99929    Evergreen Elementary School

Why: The orchard is being planted through a grant from Dreyer’s Fruit Bars, in partnership with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, to provide an ongoing source of fresh fruit to Wrangell Medical Center. Representatives from Wrangell Medical Center, the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and Edy’s will be on hand to plant the trees, with Dreyer’s providing refreshing Dreyer’s Fruit Bars to members of the community.

A BIG THANKS TO BOBS' IGA for donating cooler space for all the trees until the planting the end of this month. The trees have arrived... and a cool space was needed to keep them fresh until planting.
