Water Crisis - Information Page

The City and Borough of Wrangell currently has a sufficient treated-water supply, and regular water use may now resume. We thank the community, both residents and businesses, for their strong conservation efforts toward this end.

Although water levels have improved, water conservation is still a foremost concern for Wrangell. Even when there is an abundant supply, maintaining a water-wise lifestyle is a good practice. The Water Department asks that the community continue to take a conservation approach to all water use in order to help minimize future water restrictions.

Depending on demand and annual summer/winter conditions, our community could be faced with shortages at various times throughout the year. Lowering our water use ensures sustainable levels of clean water, reduces the electricity required for water and wastewater services, and helps to reduce the need and expense for water infrastructure.

The following are some of the ways in which we can promote water conservation as a permanent way of life in Wrangell:

• Use water wisely by making personal bans of wasteful practices.

• Repair leaky toilets and faucets and choose low-flow units when installing new fixtures.

• Opt for shorter showers over baths.

• Turn off the tap while brushing teeth and washing hands.

• Wait to run clothes and dishwashers until loads are full.

• Outfit hoses with positive shut-off nozzles, which cause the hose to cease dispensing water immediately when not in use.

• When using a pressure washer to clean sidewalks, drives, decks, siding and boats, implement a low gallon-per-minute spray nozzle.

• Apply mulch to ornamental plants to reduce watering and weeding. Water in cooler morning temperatures for less evaporation.
