Parks and Recreation Community Update

The Parks and Recreation department would like to apologize to the community and more specifically the patrons that frequent the Swimming Pool. Due to an increased attendance rate and a low staff ratio, we have had to turn families away during some of our General/Family Swims. Risk Management and safety are our primary responsibilities within the department. As some of you know, best aquatics practices follow national regulations. Within those regulations we are required to have a specific number of staff on deck during open swim times. When we have more than 30 Patrons in the facility we are required to have a minimum of 3 guards on staff. With 5 certified lifeguards on staff, this ratio is challenging to reach at times. Nevertheless, we understand that this has been disappointing for the children and frustrating for parents, to plan for something that does not come to fruition. We sincerely apologize if you or your family members have had a negative experience.

We are pleased to announce that we have completed our first of two life guarding classes for this calendar year. The course was a great success, and folks seem to be jazzed about working with Parks and Recreation Department. Although we have not hired any new lifeguards since the courses' closure, we are optimistic about new comers joining the 2015 Dream Team. We know that it has been challenging for staff and the public as we build retention in our staff. Those staff that are currently on board have been filling the gaps and working hard to meet the needs of the current schedule. A huge thanks to those that are working hard to support the overall mission.

We appreciate greatly the patience and loyalty that has been exhibited amongst the community. Our hope is that you continue to join us each week and that you have pleasurable experience. Please don't hesitate to call with feedback both positive and constructive. The more we understand about the public's needs and desires the more we can achieve.

The director is committed to providing regular updates on staff concerns during general and family swims weekly. Additionally, it may be helpful to call the facility prior to general/family swims to check the status of staff availability. Thanks!
