July 19th – Banana Point to Petersburg Bike Ride

The 5th Annual Banana Point-to-Petersburg Bike Ride is on! 

 Breakaway Adventures will be providing the Wrangell-to-Banana Point boat shuttle, and we ask that folks sign up with Parks & Rec, in advance, allowing Breakaway to plan for either one or two skippers/boats to make the early morning trip.  We welcome all genders, ages and riding levels.  Participants are encouraged to ride at their own speed; however, we do recommend riding in pairs at a minimum.   See the attached flyer for more details.

Particulars:

When: July 19th – Meet at Wrangell’s City Dock (Summer Float) by 7:45 a.m. (departure by 8:00 a.m. sharp).  Meet at the Petersburg Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal by 4:45 p.m. in order to make the 5:30 p.m. departure for the return to Wrangell that evening.

Departure: From Wrangell's City Dock (Summer Float).  Cost is $35 per person with bike.

Return: By Alaska Marine Highway (Ferry) from Petersburg ferry terminal.  Cost is $45 per person with bike

Ride Distance: approximately 28 miles, this is a 3 to 5 hour leisurely ride.

Terrain: Flat to moderate rolling

What to bring: Water, Energy Food, Photo Id (for Ferry), Cash or Credit Card (for Ferry and other personal purchases), Sunglasses, Hat, Sunblock, Proper Clothing.

Other Notes: This is a social ride, with an emphasis on FUN.  Riders are encouraged to perform a road readiness bike check prior to the ride and wear a helmet during the ride.

Potential stops along the way:

     Ohmer Creek Trail. The trailhead is located 22 miles south of Petersburg off the Mitkof Hwy. No restroom at this site; however, there are outhouses at the Ohmer Creek Campground located just south of the trailhead. A 1.1-mile gravel trail follows the creek and crosses Woodpecker Cove Road (#6280) near the junction with the highway, leading through Spruce and Hemlock forest to a floating bridge over a beaver pond. The trail ends at Snake Ridge Road.

     Manmade Hole Picnic Grounds. Located 20 miles south of Petersburg off the Mitkof Hwy. There is a restroom and shelter, with picnic tables, at the trailhead parking area. A 0.4 mile gravel trail leads you from the picnic area to the 1/4-mile trail around the lake.

     Blind Slough Picnic Grounds. Located 18 miles south of Petersburg off the Mitkof Hwy. There are restrooms and two larger shelters situated along Blind Slough. The Crystal Lake Hatchery Road is accessible in this area.

     Swan Observatory.  A wildlife viewing site available for watching Trumpeter swans and other waterfowl in Blind Slough. Located 16 miles south of Petersburg off the Mitkof Hwy, a short boardwalk trail leads from the parking area to the shelter.

     Blind River Rapids Trail. Located 14 miles south of Petersburg off the Mitkof Hwy. There is a restroom in the trailhead parking lot. A one-mile boardwalk trail leads to Blind Slough and Shelter.
