Position Summary
The City and Borough of Wrangell is recruiting for a career-track position within the Public Works Department. The Maintenance Specialist classification is a multi-stage career pathway responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair, and alteration of streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, and water and sewer utilities.
Incumbents operate public works heavy equipment in support of City projects and may work independently or as part of a team under the direction of the Public Works Foreman.
This is a full-time, hourly position with full benefits, with placement dependent on qualifications at Grade 15 through Grade 22. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and pre-employment drug screening.
Career Path Structure
This position is part of a structured progression:
- Maintenance Specialist I (Trainee): Entry-level; develops skills in equipment operation, utilities, and public works maintenance
- Maintenance Specialist II (Operator): Journey-level; performs work independently, operates heavy equipment, and utilizes specialized tools
- Maintenance Specialist III (Senior Operator): Advanced-level; leads projects, trains staff, and performs complex technical work, including surveying
This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement and includes all City and Borough benefits.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- Relevant construction, labor, or equipment experience preferred
- Increasing levels of experience required for advancement through the career track
- Must obtain Alaska Class A CDL with tanker endorsement within six (6) months
- Must obtain and maintain applicable State of Alaska DEC certifications (for advancement)
