Position Summary

The Sanitation Employee (either a Worker or Operator depending on CDL status) is a full-time hourly benefited position. Pay is either at Grade 15 or 17. The Sanitation Employee is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Borough's Waste Transfer Facility and for providing garbage collection services throughout the community. Depending on qualifications and experience, applicants may be hired as either a Sanitation Worker or Sanitation Operator.

Working under the supervision of the Sanitation Lead, this position performs a variety of duties related to waste collection, transfer station operations, landfill maintenance, equipment operation, recycling, environmental compliance, and customer service. Responsibilities may include operating garbage trucks and heavy equipment, maintaining the closed municipal landfill, processing customer transactions, handling recyclables and hazardous materials, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining community cleanliness and supporting the Borough's sanitation services.

Minimum Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• One (1) year of related experience and/or training preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to safely operate equipment, perform manual labor, and work effectively in outdoor environments and all weather conditions.
• Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
• Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and the public and maintain accurate records.
• For placement as a Sanitation Operator, possession of a valid Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.
• For placement as a Sanitation Worker, the successful candidate must be willing and able to obtain the qualifications necessary for promotion to Sanitation Operator, including obtaining a CDL.
• Must obtain an EPA Refrigeration License within one year of hire.
