The Eastern Passage Paddle Craft Trail was constructed to create a kayak and canoe portage trail, which extends from the end of pavement on Ishiyama Drive (Spur Road) to the shoreline along the Eastern Passage.

The trail follows a previously existing natural trail, which was brushed to the limits of the new trail then filled and surfaced with rock.  The trail bed is six feet wide (at the finished grade) and approximately 250 feet long.  The trail has an approximately 18%-20% grade at its surface.  A trail marker can be found at the end of the trail along the shoreline, allowing boaters to locate the trail easily from the water.

The project also included refuse clean-up of the area surrounding the trail site, which over the years had become an unauthorized dump site.  The refuse clean-up satisfies the mitigation requirements under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Nationwide Permit, issued for the project.

The project was made possible through grant funds received from the Resource Advisory Council (RAC), a division within the U.S. Forest Service.

Engineering design was provided by R&M Engineering-Ketchikan.  Construction services were provided by Ketchikan Ready Mix.

The project was completed in August 2012.
