Project Overview

The Freedom Rock® Tour is a nationwide public art initiative that honors veterans through murals painted on natural stone. Every Freedom Rock® is unique and reflects the history, military heritage, and identity of the community where it is installed.

Wrangell's Freedom Rock® will tell our story through artwork inspired by local veterans, military history, and community contributions. As Alaska's first official Freedom Rock®, it will become a lasting tribute and an important addition to our community.

About the Artist

Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II is the founder of the Freedom Rock® Tour and has spent more than two decades creating one-of-a-kind memorials throughout the United States. Working closely with each community, Bubba develops artwork that reflects local history and military heritage, ensuring every Freedom Rock® tells a story unique to its location.

Veteran Stories

Community participation is an important part of the creative process.

We're collecting stories, photographs, and historical information that celebrate the military heritage of Wrangell and Southeast Alaska. These submissions will help inspire the artwork and ensure the memorial reflects the people and events that have shaped our community. Community members are encouraged to share the story of a family member, friend, neighbor, or loved one who served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans are also welcome to submit their own stories.
