Why City Park?

Several locations were considered during development of the Freedom Rock® Veterans Memorial. Each presented different opportunities and constraints related to accessibility, visibility, available space, existing uses, future development, site conditions, and the ability to accommodate a permanent memorial.

As planning progressed, these factors were considered alongside the long-term vision for the project. Some locations presented conflicts with current or anticipated uses, while others offered limited space for the supporting improvements envisioned around the Freedom Rock.

City Park ultimately provided the strongest balance of space, accessibility, setting, and long-term flexibility.

The site allows the Freedom Rock to become part of a complete memorial setting where people can walk around the artwork, sit and reflect, learn about the stories represented, and gather for ceremonies and community events.

A Memorial and a Place to Share Wrangell's Story

The primary purpose of the Freedom Rock® Veterans Memorial is to honor veterans, recognize military service and sacrifice, and preserve stories connected to Wrangell and Alaska.

Public memorials also provide a way to share community history. Like Wrangell's Mariners' Memorial, the Freedom Rock can serve residents and families as a place of remembrance while offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the people and experiences that have shaped Wrangell.

City Park's natural setting supports both purposes. It offers a quieter place for reflection while encouraging visitors to experience an area of Wrangell beyond the downtown core.

Memorial Site Development

The artwork and initial site preparation are complete. Current work is focused on selecting, procuring, and constructing the remaining memorial elements, anticipated to include:
